👨‍🎓Teacher – Marvin Velasco

Marvin Velasco is a remarkable deaf Filipino UI/UX designer born and raised in Muntinlupa City, the Philippines.

Growing up with hearing loss, he struggled to communicate and express his creative ideas. But in spite of his hurdles, he has built a successful career for himself in the creative industry at a relatively young age.

To date, he has designed websites for more than 150+ different clients from all over the world. Adding more clients under his belt every single week. Some of his most recent and notable projects have been for flourishing companies

“The world is large enough for us to create success in life, work, and make our families proud.” — Marvin Velasco

Marvin’s work revolves around his vision to help the deaf community have more opportunities. He has been very passionate about this course and wants to make sure that deaf people are given equal opportunities like everyone else. Particularly in a competitive field like UX design.

🌲Early Life

His hearing loss came about when his mom contracted measles during her pregnancy. According to doctors, this affected his early development which made him unable to speak and hear.

He experienced difficulties in his early schooling, especially when it came to communicating and fostering relationships with people. But he eventually found an inclusive and supportive community in the Philippines School for the Deaf. His education there opened doors for Marvin and his family as they were taught fingerspelling and sign language.  Marvin’s drive and passion for self-expression and communication ultimately led him to the creative arts, where an illustrious career was waiting for him.

“The world is quickly expanding opportunities for working remotely. There are truly no limits to what you can achieve, regardless of your disadvantages. So I hope that you’ll carry everything you will learn from my work with you into your career.”
Marvin Velasco

💼Career

Marvin’s love of drawing is what motivated him to pursue a career in design.

“It’s always been my way of self-expression. It’s the language that allows people to understand who I am, my feelings and my ideas. From there, it evolved to what I’m doing now,” said Marvin.

Marvin has created engaging digital content for clients locally and abroad. His extensive portfolio features digital art, graphics, web designs, store designs, photo manipulation and printing designs for clients locally and abroad.

He has also worked with iconic brands such as Jollibee, Greenwich, and Chowking.

“My disability has certainly helped me advance my career and connect with others. It certainly didn’t stop me from pursuing my interests,” said Marvin.

Currently, he is working closely with front-end developers and the management team of DotYeti to produce creative web- &, UI/UX designs that elevate user experience. His work has helped clients strengthen their online presence and skyrocket their online engagement among target audiences.

He now has his first web design workshop—a passion project of his—to help other people with hearing loss develop the skills they need to become a professional web designer.
